A mountain cabin trip with dogs is different from a hotel stay. You are going to be in and out of rivers, on trails, rolling in red clay, and driving back roads. The list below is built for that kind of trip.
What we provide at both cabins:
- Food and water bowls
- Dog treats
- Poop bags
- Dog washing station
- Orange towels for dogs (red clay resistant)
- Dog crate (Headwaters only)
- Stick library (Headwaters only)
- Portable yard fence (Fish Head Lodge only)
What to Pack
Food & Water
- Enough food for the full trip plus one extra day
- A collapsible water bowl for hikes and day trips (bowls are at the cabin but not in your daypack)
- Any supplements or medications mixed into food
Health & Safety
- Flea and tick prevention current — apply before the trip, not when you arrive. Mountain forest means ticks every day.
- Any prescription medications with enough supply for the trip
- Vaccination records — required if you plan to use local daycare or boarding
- Your vet's phone number and the number for Mountain Emergency Animal Center in Blue Ridge
- Basic dog first aid: gauze, antiseptic wipes, tweezers for ticks, self-adhesive bandage wrap
Gear
- A 6-foot leash — required at all Georgia state parks and national forest trails. Not a retractable; a fixed 6-foot maximum.
- A second leash as backup — easy to lose or leave somewhere
- A collar with current ID tags and your cell number
- Microchip registered and current — confirm before you leave
- Dog life jacket if your dog is a swimmer and you are not certain of their ability in current (the Toccoa moves fast after rain)
- Dog booties or paw wax if your dog is not accustomed to rocky terrain
Comfort
- Your dog's bed or a familiar blanket — a consistent sleep spot helps anxious dogs settle in new spaces
- A few familiar toys
- Your dog's regular shampoo if they have a sensitive coat (we provide the wash station; bring what works for them)
What People Forget Every Time
- The backup leash
- Vaccination records (always needed the day you need daycare)
- Tick prevention — easy to forget, hard to fix once you are in the mountains
- A waterproof bag or liner for wet dog gear in the car on the way home
