The Toccoa River starts in the mountains of Union County and runs cold and clear through the Chattahoochee National Forest. Getting on the water here is not as simple as walking up to any stretch of riverbank — you need a designated access point, whether that is a USFS recreation area or private access like what both of our cabins have. Knowing where to put in is half the trip. Whether you want to float a tube on a warm afternoon, paddle a stretch of flatwater, or work the eddies in a canoe, here is where to go.
Starting at the Cabin
Headwaters sits directly on the Toccoa River. The river runs along the front of the property, and guests can wade in, float a short stretch, or simply sit on the bank and watch the water move. It is as close as it gets.

Toccoa River Canoe Trail
The Toccoa River Canoe Trail is a USFS-designated water trail that launches from Deep Hole Recreation Area and flows west and north 13.8 miles to Sandy Bottom Recreation Area. It is one of the more complete ways to experience this stretch of the river — you can paddle the full length or put in at an intermediate access point for a shorter float.

Deep Hole Recreation Area
Deep Hole Recreation Area is a USFS day-use area on the Toccoa River. It is a well-known local swimming hole and a popular put-in or take-out for floats on this section of the river. The water runs deeper here than in many other spots, making it a favorite on warm days. Dogs are welcome. Alcohol is not permitted at USFS recreation areas.
Sandy Bottom Recreation Area
Sandy Bottom Recreation Area is another USFS access point on the Toccoa. The name says it — the bottom here is sandy and the entry and exit from the water is easy, making it a natural choice for tubers and canoes. What to Bring
- Life jacket (PFD): We believe Georgia law requires one on board per person and that children under 13 must wear one at all times — but verify the current law before you go. Even strong swimmers benefit from one in moving current.
- Water shoes: The river bottom is rocky in places. Water shoes or sandals with straps are better than flip-flops.
- Sun protection: On the water all day means full sun exposure. Sunscreen, a hat, and a long-sleeve shirt go a long way.
- Polarized sunglasses: They cut the glare off the water and make a long float much easier on your eyes.
- Dry bag: For your phone, keys, and anything that cannot get wet. Mountain weather can change quickly and an afternoon storm can soak everything in the boat.
- Small first aid kit: Rocky river bottoms, hooks, and sun exposure — worth having something basic on board.
- Water and snacks: There are no services on the river. Pack what you need for the float — and pack it in, pack it out.
Water Safety on Mountain Rivers
The Toccoa is generally mild, but mountain rivers deserve respect. Water levels rise fast after rain — and the rain does not have to be anywhere near you.
I learned this the hard way as a teenager. My mom, my younger brother, a group of friends, and I took an overnight canoe trip on a river in Florida. We set up camp on the bank, went to sleep under clear skies, and in the middle of the night one of the guys rolled over in his tent straight into water. The river had risen and flooded the campsite. We never saw a single drop of rain — it had all fallen upstream. He spent the rest of the trip wearing my mom's pink terry cloth sweatpants. She thought it was hilarious. So did we.
The lesson stuck. A pleasant float on a clear morning can become a very different situation after a storm upstream. Check the weather before you put in — not just locally, but upstream. And if conditions change while you are on the water, get off.
Cell service is extremely limited in the Suches area and throughout much of the Chattahoochee National Forest. Do not rely on your phone for navigation or emergency communication once you are on the river. Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to be back.
